There’s no wood like Ipe.
Among the most durable woods for outdoor use, Ipe is naturally insect and rot resistant and can last for generations.
Ipe tends to check or splinter less than other woods – making it one of the rare woods you can walk on barefoot even when weathered.
Installed correctly, all Ipe needs is an occasional touch-up of tropical hardwood oil to preserve its rich walnut-brown color and natural variegation. Without such re-application, Ipe’s exposed surface will eventually bleach in the sun, but the weathering is only skin-deep and can be sanded out if desired.
With decades of experience in Ipe and other tropical hardwoods, we can give lumberyards and deck specialists the edge they need to compete.
American Lumber offers Ipe decking, components, and siding – clear fiber and top quality. We call this offering Peconic Bay Ipe, after the maritime jewel of the northeast, where New England meets the mid-Atlantic.
Ipe is a very stable wood, but because Ipe is so strong, it can snap hidden fasteners if it warps. So be especially careful when using hidden fasteners, to ensure proper ventilation and drainage.
Top-quality Ipe is partially Kiln-Dried (KD). Unless specified as such, KD Ipe is not dried to an interior-use moisture content, but rather has been dried for improved outdoor stability and to give it a cleaner appearance on delivery.
Ipe is now a CITES listed species, along with some species traditionally considered “greener” alternatives. All of our Ipe is harvested legally and under the supervision of regulatory agencies. If you are interested in ‘green’ alternatives to Ipe, just ask – we can help with that, too.
