American Lumber is pleased to present Certified Wood for the Independent Lumber Dealer. The seminar is offered through the NRLA and participants can earn CBMS education credits. Here is the course description:
Architects, homeowners, government, and environmental organizations – not to mention the media – are all weighing in on “green building”, which some analysts predict will grow faster than any other aspect of our industry for years to come. In keeping with this trend, there is increasing interest in “certified” wood.
Problem is, you’re the guy they’re going to get it from, and if you’re like most lumber dealers, you’re getting requests for material you don’t have, don’t know where to get, and aren’t sure how to sell.
Topics:
• Brief overview of wood as a green building material
• Who’s asking for certified wood and why are they asking for it
• Overview of popular green building standards
• Overview of popular forest certification standards
• What kind of material is available certified?
• How does certification work for the independent retail lumberyard?
Learning Objectives:
• Be able to explain the benefits of certified wood to a customer
• Gain a working familiarity with the role of LEED and the Green Building Initiative as it relates to certified wood
• Be able to name three of the most prominent wood certification systems and describe their basic differences
• Know the reasons and process for becoming chain-of-custody certified
This seminar will *not* feature a PowerPoint presentation or promote any specific product, certifying agency, or certification system. The goal is to improve our business and become more literate about green building and specifically wood certification. Questions and discussion will be encouraged!
